“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

As I shared yesterday, humility is a virtue we must intentionally learn. Jesus clearly stated that He is humble in heart (Matthew 11:29), while pride is a trait associated with the devil (Isaiah 14:12–15; Ezekiel 28:17). This means the more humble we are, the more we reflect Jesus. On the contrary, a proud person imitates the enemy in attitude and action. We honor Christ when we walk humbly before God.

Previously, we looked at how humility is expressed through obedience to God’s Word, esteeming others above ourselves, and a life of service. Today, let’s consider two more expressions of humility.

In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God said, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray…” . To humble oneself and pray often involves fasting, which is a physical and spiritual act of submission before God.

We see this in 1 Kings 21:17–29. When King Ahab received a word of judgment for his sin, he tore his clothes, fasted, and mourned. God responded: “See how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the calamity in his days” (verse 29 NKJV). His act of fasting was recognized by God as an act of humility.

Another way to express humility is by acknowledging God as the source of our blessings. King Nebuchadnezzar was judged for attributing his success to himself rather than to God (Daniel 4:30–32). In contrast, Apostle Paul gave all credit to God when he said, “By the grace of God I am what I am…” (1 Corinthians 15:10).

Humility draws mercy, while pride invites judgment. Let us therefore choose the way of humility, that we may continually walk under God’s grace and mercy.
