Life and Death are in the hands of God

CALL TO PRAYER

Title: Life and Death are in the hands of Godย

For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before themโ€ฆ

(Ecclesiastes 9:1-12)

When I was in school, I remember helping a school mate who was in need of help answering a question during an Exam. Though I knew how risky it was to stretch forth my paper for her to copy, I did it anyway and fortunately for us we werenโ€™t caught. Surprisingly, on the day our results were given, she got all the answers correctly and I had 1 point deducted. I was very angry to have helped her at the first place and vowed from that day on, never to help anyone during an Exam.

Now one may ask, what has this gotten to do with the scripture given? Itโ€™s simple! Just because I was good in that Subject or had a good intention on that day doesnโ€™t qualify me to be the best at the end or get a much higher results. For no one knows what may happen tomorrow. It’s only the one who holds the power to bless and destroy that has the final say, just as the teacher had the power to give good grades to whom he chooses.

King Solomon in this chapter took his time to answer all the questions he had towards life and came to this conclusion: our fate lies in the hands of God, for only He decides our Life, either to prolong or shorten it. We arenโ€™t in control of our destinies. Life does not always work the way we expect! Good things do not always happen to good people! The strongest doesnโ€™t always win a battle! The wise or skilful arenโ€™t aways the richest! Life is brief and uncertain. Success isnโ€™t guaranteed for every one. We can all die at any moment.ย

Now some may want to throw in the towel and just stop being good at all, because it may sound depressing not to know where life itself is leading you . But one thing is for sure:ย  Life isnโ€™t in your hands and same as death, both are controlled by God. Only He shows mercy to those He chooses to show mercy(Rom 9:18). Donโ€™t be surprised when unforeseen circumstances occur and rely on the one who controls life and death. Let us live a life that can face up to these realities. We need to live a life ( a righteous life)ย  that can withstand the brief and uncertain nature of life. Otherwise our faith wouldnโ€™t be strong enough to withstand the hard times yet to come.

As christians we are confident that God will cause all things to work together for our good irrespective of the hard times or the unforeseen circumstances that may arise (Rom 8:28).

The unknown should not cast a shadow over our Joy, faith or work because we know that someone greater is in control and that we can put our trust in Him. So brethren, donโ€™t let what you donโ€™t know about the future destroy the joy God wants to give you today.

Prayer point:ย

Let’s pray that God grants all believers the heart to be obedient and to do only His will all the time. May He strengthen our faith in Him to be able to withstand all circumstances.
