Title: Light in Darkness

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth”. – 1 John 1:5-6

In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth as stated in Genesis 1:1-2, the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep. This scripture shortly describes the state of the earth before the introduction and manifestation of Light, which through the spoken word of God came into existence (Genesis 1:3). Light therefore already existed, which is God, before it came alive. The Bible further describes the life being the light of men who was in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:4). We see from the beginning that though the earth was in darkness, this condition of the earth was subject to change due to the divine nature of God who is light. In Genesis 1:3-4, And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and separated the light from darkness. 

Let’s make this a bit practical, for those of you who grew up in Africa can testify to this, there are certain areas and households that though you pay your light bills, the lights in your neighbourhood can just be disconnected for hours without knowing when they will be on again. Most times, you would have to light up some candles to see clearly or even see at all. After a long period of sitting in darkness, most people shout for joy when the light comes back on. Darkness is therefore the absence of light, while light enables us to see in darkness. So was it in the beginning when God created the earth, everything was in darkness till light came forth. The only way to get the full view of creation is through His Light. 

In our scriptural verse for today, 1 John 1:5, the bible revealed the nature of God as Light, and cautions us that in him there is no darkness at all. So as children of God, we ought to emulate Him as we fellowship with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ (1 John 1:3). Our deeds and our fellowship with the Father determine if we are walking in the His light which, is truth, or in darkness. The bible declares in John 3:20-21, everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. The light of God reflects His Truth and His truth is revealed to us through the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). God has called us to be His light in the world (Matthew 5:14) our light is meant to shine in the darkness and should not be deemed as the bible says in John 1:5, The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Another way we live His truth is being obedient to His word this is evident that we know Him. 

Knowing God is walking in His light, and walking in His light is living in His Truth.

Prayer Point

Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s ask God to grant the entire body of Christ the grace to walk in His light and live His truth daily in Jesus’ name.
