On that day the LORD will shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the LORD going before them ย (Zechariah 12:8, NIV).
When God created Adam, He said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26). From the beginning, it has been God’s will for us to be like Him. However, when the first man manifested, he was not fully like God, as certain attributes of God were placed in trees, and man would become like God when he partook of the fruits (Genesis 2:9; 3:22).
We recall how Adam partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and died spiritually (Genesis 2:17; 3:6-7). The tree brought death to Adam not because it wasn’t good for food but because Adam partook of it in disobedience. The fall of man resulted in man gaining a new nature, the nature of sin (Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:3), falling far below God’s desire for him to be like Him.
However, God always intended to restore man to His original intent. In the book of Zechariah, a promise was made about those who live in Jerusalem, where God said, “the feeblest among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the LORD going before them” (Zechariah 12:8). That is, a generation of people would rise in Jerusalem who would be like God.
This promise was a direct consequence of an action God was going to take, for He said, “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication…” (Zechariah 12:10). The transformation of the people to be like God is because of the spirit of grace and supplication they would receive. The Spirit of grace and supplication is the spirit of prayer. When we spend time praying, especially praying in tongues, we are empowered to be like Him in our character, manifestation of power, and His other attributes.
Some years ago, I asked God in prayer to help me be more like Him in my character. He responded and said, “Pray more in tongues.” Prayer helps us become more like God.
Prayer Point.
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask for a fresh baptism of the Spirit of grace and supplication for each member of the body of Christ.
