“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,

Ephesians 2:14 NIV

Love is the commandment of the New Testament (John 13:34). The fear of God in the New Testament is to walk in love. Even as we await His second coming, we must ensure that our garment is without spot or wrinkle (Eph. 5:27). Seeking the understanding of the commandment of love and practising its dictate is therefore worthwhile.

In Apostle Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians Church, he mentioned: “May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is (Eph. 3:18)”. From Paul’s prayer, we see that love has dimensions, and each part must be comprehended. This comprehension comes from understanding the New Covenant.  Therefore, the doctrine of the New Testament is not all stated, it must be discerned. In our scriptural verse of today, A mention of the dividing wall of hostility was made. This wall existed in the Herodian temple and served to prevent the gentile convert to Judaism from accessing the inner courts of the temple. That is, beyond this wall, the gentiles cannot cross.

This limit placed on the worship of the Gentile convert to Judaism was due to the commandments in the Old Covenant. As we know, the extent to which a Jews could relate with a Gentile was limited by certain commands, and the purpose of those commands was the preservation of the seed (Jesus Christ). At His first coming, He fulfilled the Law and abolished it by His death and resurrection. By the removal of the Old Covenant, the dividing wall of hostility was destroyed.

The dividing wall of hostility is not just a symbol of the divide that existed between the Jew and Gentiles, but it also symbolises all the divides that exist in humanity: ethnicity, social status, level of education, language, skin colour etc. By its removal, God is instructing us that our love must extend beyond the walls that exist in humanity. Relating with someone based on who they are in the flesh is therefore a sin. We must see beyond the limitation of the flesh, into what God has made them in the Spirit and love all as such. By doing this, our love is limitless, and we are approved as Children of God (Matt. 5:48).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us see people as He sees them, and to love them as He loves them.
