34ย โ€œSo donโ€™t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Todayโ€™s trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:34

In our opening verse today Jesus calls us to live in the present moment and not worry about tomorrow. Although Jesus talks specifically about tomorrow, living in the present moment also means not dwelling on the past. It is more wise and beneficial to live in the present moment.

There are times when we reflect on the good memories of the past. There are also times when we dream about the bright future we hope and pray for ourselves. Although these thoughts are good they are to be moderated and put in check. Also, it’s not good to dwell on bad past experiences. For instance, if you have a traumatizing experience and you keep dwelling on it, how do you heal from that past? Also, when you dwell too much on the good memories of the past you can look past the advantages of today and miss out on them.

Let’s look at what I would term “the looking forward syndrome”. You see we tend to keep looking forward to something and being anxious to get it. The graduate wants to get a job. The young worker looks forward to getting married. The married couple are looking forward to buying a house. The parents are looking forward to grandchildren. Do you notice that all these people could be one person at different stages of his life? Now as much as it is good to dream, you can end up in an endless cycle of looking forward without ever appreciating and being content in the present moment. So take time to appreciate God for what you have today. Every season does not just have crosses to carry but also fruits to enjoy.

Now each season of life comes with its advantages and disadvantages and sometimes the next season may bring new advantages while some old advantages disappear. Just think of the case of being single and transitioning to married. Now imagine if you missed out on your single advantages because you were constantly anxious about moving into the married season. As you live well each season, it prepares you for the next season and you don’t miss out on living each season to its fullest. Now I am addressing believers and I believe you are aware this means living in God’s will for you today, not the worldly interpretation of living in sin in the name of enjoying life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for this word today. Let’s pray that He helps us by His Spirit to live well in the present moment, carrying our crosses and enjoying the bread of today.
