If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and exult in the surrender of my body, a but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

1 Corinthians 13: 1-10

I have listened to people express their scepticism about people who are religious. They say religious people are hypocrites. They say one thing and do another. These sceptics give examples of religious people who are in church every day and pray loudly but are known for wickedness. We know that not all religious people are like this but we can’t but admit that there are many who do just that. However, this is not new. At the time of Jesus, the Pharisee’s were just like this. And today we can be very much modern-day Pharisees; when your religiousness or spirituality ends at public displays and outward appearances without reflecting in a loving character. Can someone enjoy Christ personality through you?

Once again, we see from our opening verse that it possible to be prayerful, prophesy and do signs and wonders without having love and it tells us in that case you are NOTHING. So, what is missing? Or what went wrong along the line.? What is missing is that the motivation was never love or along the line the motivation deviated from love to something else. Could be that you are prayerful because you want people to esteem you as prayerful. It might be you had a love for God and the church and the holy spirited gifted you with prophecy but now your heart has tilted towards money, fame and so love is no longer your motivation. Jesus stated these two as the greatest commandment’s: love God with all your heart, mind and soul. And love your neighbour as yourself. (Mark 12:30-31).

People look at the outward appearance but God is interested in your heart. (1 Samual 16:7). God doesn’t just want us to do good deeds. The intention is very important and judged by God. Are you doing this from a position of love? Love is our main goal. Love is our compass. Love is our engine. We must start everything because of love and continue because of love and end it, if it has to end, because of love. Personally, I would say what drew me closer to God and was like a turnaround experience (you can say born again experience) was experiencing love from the members of a religious congregation(Foculare movement) that ran a school I attended. While interacting with them I not only heard the word preached to me but was really moved by the love they witnessed.

In conclusion, we have to always start our service for God and neighbour because of love as the number one motivation. It should not be fear of condemnation. (1 John 4:18). Or any other. To be honest, to love is not always easy. Most times, he who loves the most suffers the most but love always comes back to he who loves and we all know that when we love there is joy that ignites in the heart like a flame. It lightens the heart. Love is understanding instead of being judgemental and condemning. Love is patient, is kind, is polite, cares about the good of others, love is forgiving and can overlook offenses and so on.
