“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34, NIV).

When Jesus manifested as a man, He gave us a new commandment, saying, “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). Therefore, to love properly, we must understand how He demonstrated His love for us.

The nature of love Jesus Christ demonstrated for us is selfless; He placed the needs of others above His own. This love wasn’t demonstrated when we were deserving, but when we were least deserving, for Scripture says, “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). This suggests that His love for us wasn’t earned by us but was freely given by Him. Like Jesus, our love shouldn’t be earned by those we love.

This selfless love gives, forgives, and forbears. In the sense that God gave us His Son, and He forgave our sins (John 3:16, Romans 5:8). Also, God is patient with us until we change (forbearance) (Romans 2:4, 1 Peter 3:20). In like manner, we demonstrate the God-kind of love by giving to, forgiving, and forbearing those we say we love.

God is love (1 John 4:8), and we know God when we love (1 John 4:7). Let’s aspire to love as He has demonstrated, which is His commandment for us in the New Testament. Failing to love is failing in the faith. Let’s re-evaluate ourselves and see if we are loving as He demonstrated. In any area we fall short, let’s ask Him for mercy and help to obey Him.

Prayer Points:

  • Let’s thank God for His Word today.
  • Let’s ask Him to help every believer to love like Him
