As you probably know, Jesus’s commandment to us believers is that we love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34-35 NIV). The opening verse says God so loved the world that He gave…. So in other words loving is giving; Giving your time, your attention, energy, money, prayers etc. At times love suffers but does so joyfully. Just as with every other command of God, giving also has a lot of benefits.

Jesus says in Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” So giving attracts wealth. This might not appeal to your reasoning but it is God’s word applicable to those with this Faith. This is how to enter God’s economy. Other related verses are Matthew 19:29 and Proverbs 19:17.

Saint Paul quotes in Acts 20:35 that Jesus Christ said it is more blessed to give than to receive. So there is a joy that comes from giving or loving. However, sometimes this joy does not come from the start because before the joy there can be the pain of sacrifice. But when the understanding is there the joy comes after.

Giving can be one of the hardest things because it comes to the point of putting into practice your love instead of just talking. However, giving among many other benefits leads to joy and rich rewards both in heaven and on earth as promised by God in His Word.

So then who should we give to? Everyone. It’s like asking who should we love. Give to the needy, Give to the church, Give to your neighbour etc because loving is giving.

Let’s pray for the grace to trust God and give out of love knowing that He will replenish it with even more so that we go on loving.
