And it came about, when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the testimony were in Mosesโ€™ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him. Exodus 34:29 NASB2020

Moses the man of God had a relationship with God that was exemplary . Exemplary in the sense that the mind of God was revealed and it formed a pattern for us to imitate. In Exodus 34:29, it was said that Moses did not know that the skin of his face was shining because of his speaking with God. What does it mean and how can we experience same?

The brightness on the skin of Moses’s face was the glory of God. We understand this to be so when Apostle Paul made reference to this encounter in 2 Corinthians 3 . Now, when the Bible said the glory of God on the face of Moses was because of his speaking with God, there’s need for us to investigate what was said in that conversation. Ever since his encounter with God at the burning bush, Moses had been speaking with God, but there was no instance a mention was made of his face shining. In fact, this was the second time Moses was invited to the mountain to receive the commandments. And the first time nothing like this was recorded.

What Moses did different this time in his communication with God was that he responded by interceding for the people of Israel after God revealed Himself as a merciful God to Him (Exo. 34:9). Before this time, God had revealed Himself to Moses and the people of Israel as the God of Judgement, by His judging of the nation of Egypt. And after the Children of Israel made the golden calf, God promised to punish them for their sins and God seemed reluctant to forgive (Exo. 32:32-35). Nevertheless, after Moses requested to see the glory of God and He proclaimed His name to him (Moses), among the things God said of Himself was that He was compassionate, merciful, and forgiving (Exo. 34: 6-7). Moses, responded to this revelation of the nature of God by interceding for the people of Israel.

God was so pleased by Moses’s action that He said: “Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee (Exodus 34:10 KJV)“, promising Moses the manifestation of His glory.

Judgement is not God’s will, for He desires mercy (Hosea 6:6). And mercy is released when we intercede for sinners. When we engage in the ministry of intercession, we position ourselves to be chosen to manifest His glory.
