Title: Manifesting Our Identity in Christ

An identity is the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. Right from the creation of Adam, God has demonstrated that it is His will for us to have a shared identity with Him, but the identity we manifest is subject to that which we profess. Understanding the human make up and the operation of faith in this regard will help us agree with God in our profession, which will enable us manifest our identity in Christ.

Man is tripartite in nature, as his full make up constitutes of the spirit, the soul, and the body. This can be discerned when the Bible said “… May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1Thes. 5:23). Each of the different aspects of man’s make up have specific traits which may form man’s identity. The first man, Adam, had his identify from the state of his soul, for his entire make up was called “a living soul (Gen. 2:7)“. When man sinned and fell, God called him flesh (Gen. 6:3), for his identity was now derived from the state of his body. Now, the born again Christian was created after Christ, who was described as being a life-giving spirit (1 Cor. 15:45). This means, our identity as Christians is derived from the state of our spirit, which is now one with God.

The concept of being one with God means that whatever God is, that is who we are. This was what He meant when He said “… Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness … (Gen. 1:26 NIV)”. However, to manifest this identity, what we confess about ourselves should be based on what has been perfect in our spirits, and not the state of our soul and body. For example, the Lord has declared that we are His righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21). So, we must always confess our righteous identity, even when we still struggle with sin in our flesh. As we agree with what God has declared concerning us despite the contradiction in our body, we will be empowered to manifest it (the identity of our spirit).

When the word about Jesus Christ is preached, it is like a mirror showing who we are in Christ (James 1:23-24). As we declare, in faith, that which has been shown of us through the image of Christ revealed in the word, we receive the grace to conform (transformed) to that which has been declared about us (the Glory/image of God).

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s also ask Him to help us keep our confession in line with what has been declared to us from the word.
