A covenant is an agreement between two or more individuals. This can be between men, or between God and man. Ever since creation, God has been making covenants with men. In every covenant God made with man, there were specific conditions He placed on access to the blessing.

The first covenant we find God making with man was the Adamic Covenant, which was between Him and Adam. Though He placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, where he could freely access the blessings of God in the trees of the garden and exercise his dominion, there was a condition given by God: he must not partake of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16–17). When Adam disobeyed, he lost access to the blessings as he was removed from the garden (Genesis 3:23–24).

It has always been God’s will for man to regain access to the fullness of His blessing. God decided to call an individual—Abraham—and demonstrated through him to all who would come afterward, how access to the blessing can be by faith, not works. In the Adamic Covenant, access to the blessing was by works, for when he disobeyed, he lost access. Likewise, in the Mosaic Covenant (the Old Covenant), access to the blessing was by works, for they were blessed when they obeyed and cursed when they disobeyed (Deuteronomy 28:1–2, 15).

When we place our faith in Christ Jesus, we are accounted as children of Abraham. Therefore, we become heirs of the same blessing as him by faith (Galatians 3:7, 29; Romans 4:16). Unlike those in the Old Covenant, we are already blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). To manifest these blessings, there are certain acts of faith we are to do.
