When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf

ย 2 Samuel 6:13 NIV

When David first attempted to move the tabernacle to Jerusalem, there was an outburst against Uzzah, who tried to keep the Ark from falling by touching it. Because he was not a Levite, he was struck dead by Godย  (2 Samuel 6:5โ€“15).

This event had such an impact on David that he became afraid to go near the Ark of God. But when he saw how God blessed the household of Obed-Edom while the Ark was in his house (2 Samuel 6:11โ€“12), David decided to bring the Ark to his city. Before doing so, he studied the Scriptures to understand Godโ€™s laws regarding the handling of the Ark.

In addition to learning that only Levites were allowed to touch the Ark, David also discovered that those carrying it were to stop after every six steps to offer sacrifices (2 Samuel 6:13, 1 Chronicles 15:12-13 NKJV). Now, the Ark was merely a symbol of Godโ€™s presence with Israel. The New Covenant reality is the Holy Spirit dwelling within usโ€”we are the true Ark of God.

With this understanding, just as the Levites had to pause every six steps to offer sacrifices, we are to pause moment by moment to offer sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving to God as we go about our daily activities. These intentional moments of intimacy increase our awareness of Him and sharpen our sensitivity to His voice.

Scripture records that David stopped seven times a day to praise the Lord (Psalm 119:164), and Daniel prayed three times a day (Daniel 6:10โ€“28). Like these saints in the Old Covenant, we are to intentionally pause and commune with God throughout the day.

Those who practice this moment-by-moment intimacy with God demonstrate the reality of being one with Him and walk in His power.
