And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. ย ( 1 John 1:6 NIV)
Obedience is the act of following or complying with instructions, rules, or authority. It involves submitting to the will or command of another person, organization, or institution. In the context of Christianity, obedience refers to the act of submitting to God’s will, commands, and authority.
There are different types of obedience, including radical obedience, critical obedience, and conditional obedience.
- ย Radical obedience is following instructions without questioning or critical thinking.
- ย Critical obedience is following instructions while also evaluating their validity or morality.
- ย Conditional obedience is following instructions only under certain conditions or circumstances.
The kind of obedience God requires from us is radical obedience, which demonstrates our deep trust in and love for Him.
Obedience involves following God’s commands, laws, and principles (Exodus 20:1-17). It also involves surrendering our will to God’s will, even when it’s difficult or challenging (Matthew 26:39).
Obedience has several benefits, including deepening our relationship with God and fostering intimacy (John 14:21-24). Obedience can also lead to blessings and prosperity, both spiritually and materially (Deuteronomy 28:1-14).
Disobeying God can have profound spiritual and practical consequences, as highlighted in scripture:
- It can lead to separation from God and spiritual disconnection, resulting in what the Bible describes as spiritual death (Isaiah 59:1-2, Romans 6:20-23).
- It can bring chaos, destruction, and divine judgment, as seen in accounts like the flood in Genesis 6:1-8 and the exile of Israel in 2 Kings 17:7-23.
- It can cause us to forfeit Godโs abundant blessings and promises, missing out on the fullness of His provision (Deuteronomy 28:15-68).
May we, through faith in Jesusโ name, avoid the pitfalls of disobedience and remain aligned with Godโs will, so we do not miss out on His blessings.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for his word. Let’s ask God for the grace to be obedient. Let’s ask God for the grace to surrender all to Him.
