I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
— Romans 12:1 (KJV)

For some days now, the phrase “reasonable service” in the above verse has been on my heart. This expression reveals that living a life of holiness is God’s expected response from us for the love He has shown us.

Obedience is a proof of love, for Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). When Adam disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, it revealed that his love for God was not strong enough—he was more moved by his wife’s suggestion than by God’s command (and Adam was not deceived).

To give humanity a reason to love Him, God sent His Son to die for us, revealing the depth of His love. His forgiveness of our sins was meant to draw us into loving Him in return. Jesus affirmed this truth when He told the parable of two debtors to the Pharisee who criticised Him for allowing a sinful woman to wash His feet. After the parable, Jesus asked, “Which of them will love him more?” The Pharisee answered, “The one who was forgiven the greater debt,” and Jesus agreed (Luke 7:37–43).

The more we understand the extent of God’s love for us, the deeper our love for Him becomes. And this love compels us to obey Him. Living a life of holiness—our reasonable service—is grounded in this realisation.

It is only reasonable to love God back through obedience when we truly grasp the magnitude of His love demonstrated on the cross of Calvary. But if, after realising this, we still choose to sin, we are trampling the Son of God underfoot and insulting the Spirit of grace (Hebrews 10:29).

Prayer Point

Let’s thank God for His love toward us.
Let’s ask Him to reveal to us the depth of this love and help us respond by living a life of holiness.
