After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. “
Genesis 15 1NIV

Shortly after His conquest of about five kings that attacked and defeated Sodom, Abraham encountered God who introduced Himself to him as his shield. A shield is “a broad piece of metal or another suitable material, held by straps or a handle attached on one side, used as a protection against blows or missiles”. Shields are for protection. In other words, God was telling Abraham that He was his protection.

Being children of Abraham, we are heirs of the same blessing. Meaning, as with Abraham, God is our protection. Now, despite this truth, how come many Christians are exposed to the devil’s attack and others fall victim? This is so because despite God being our shield (protection), there are certain things we need to know and practice for this to become manifest in our lives. David highlighted this in Psalm 91, where He wrote about those who abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1). Some of the benefits he mentioned were deliverance from evil (Psalm 91:3-10, 14-15), which is because He will give His angels charge over them (Psalm: 11-12), authority over the enemy (Psalm 91:13), exaltation (Psalm 91:14), and vision of Jesus (Psalm 91:16). So, protection is one of the benefits of abiding under the shadow.

We abide under the shadow of the Almighty when we abide in the word and pray without ceasing (the practice of intimacy with Him). Again, when we say to God that which we have seen of Him, like calling Him our protection or refuge (Psalm 91:2), He is stirred up to bring about that manifestation in our lives.

Prayer Point.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us abide under His shadow.
