5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Corinthians 10:5. KJV
The bible categorises temptation into three major groups, namely: The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16).
The lust of the flesh, we can say, is the needs of your body trying to rule over you with no restrictions. The lust of the eyes is the things which you don’t really need but are deceived into thinking you must have, like, for instance, having ten houses; materialism. And the pride of life is self-exaltation; seeking to be worshipped instead of directing worship to God.
All these temptations can come in different forms, through offers or seeming opportunities, but they can also come just as thoughts and desires. These are what we can call negative thoughts. They are very dangerous because they create the framework or do the groundwork for sinful action. After you have entertained such thoughts for a long time without casting them down, you are now well ready to fall into the sin at any opportunity. In fact, the bible lets us understand that you have already sinned if the evil thoughts and desires are already well seated in your heart (Matthew 5:21-30).
That is why we must cast down every imagination, and every thought that exalts itself against the word of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. How do we do this practice? Jesus showed us through the account of His temptations after His 40-day fast in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). For every temptation the devil brought, His response was to quote the accurate word of God.
So our response to evil thoughts is to speak the word of God to ourselves. Counteract it with the word of God. If you know the word of God superficially, then you can be deceived even by the word of God, but if you are well-grounded in the word, then you won’t be swayed by every wave of false doctrine.
Sometimes temptations even lack grounds in wisdom. Just imagine selling your soul for wealth and fame that last for a while, only to suffer in hell for eternity. Ask yourself, of all the things I could sell, why must it be my soul?
We read and hear the word of God so that we acquire godly wisdom, the kind that will enable us to say no to the Devil and say yes to God’s instructions. As you know, we also need to ask God in prayer to resist temptation, and such prayers are even more effective when they happen before the temptation, not just during.
In Conclusion, God is good, so trust and obey!
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for the word today. Let’s pray for God to help us eat the word of God so that we can speak it out when tempted physically or with evil imaginations. Let’s pray that we learn to pray as a lifestyle.
