Title: Overcoming Sin Key 3: Prayer

By: Daniel Peter

Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realmโ€ฆ..
Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his Godโ€ฆโ€ฆ
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetimeโ€ฆ.
(Dan 6:3,5,10 KJV)

Prophet Daniel was one of the men that manifested Godโ€™s character in the Old Testament. He was referred to as a man with an excellent spirit (Dan. 6:3). Even His adversaries stated โ€˜we shall not find any occasion against this Danielโ€™, indicating that the spirit of excellence was about His character. Simply put, Daniel was excellent/perfect in his Character.

The secret to Danielโ€™s character was revealed in Daniel 6:10. It was said that โ€˜he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetimeโ€™. We see prayer was the reason Daniel was able to stay pure in a country where iniquity was celebrated. By careful study, we can find that prayer was also the secret to Job and Noahโ€™s success. The effectiveness of prayer in overcoming sin goes beyond the mere habit of praying, but there are strategies that when applied, we can experience much success. I will address some of them.

Now, sin is not just an act, itโ€™s a being. We can discern this when we consider Godโ€™s statement to Cain when He was angry over His brother. God said in Genesis 4:7 โ€˜โ€ฆ.shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. The phrases โ€˜his desireโ€™ and โ€˜over himโ€™ reveals that sin is a person. In fact, the word sin is a compound word that addresses all the spirits that compels man to do things against the will of God. If you find yourself lying, there is a spirit of deception compelling you to do so. If you have issues with lust, there is a spirit of lust compelling you to do so. The same goes with pride, stealing and anger etc. These evil spirits impart their nature to the people they influence. I thank God for the authority that we have in Christ Jesus over these spirits. This authority was revealed in Luke 10:19. As we command these spirits to leave us, we are set free from their influence.

Another way we can pray is to ask God to reveal areas of our lives that is not consistent with His will. One who is truly born again has the desire to please God. But many times we sin without even knowing; not every aspect of the commands of God have been revealed to us. Other times we forget what is right to do. But by prayer, God will reveal areas we are going wrong that we do not know about. As we make adjustments, we will be manifesting His righteousness/ His character.

Lastly, we just ask him to help us keep His commandment and to lead us away from temptation (Matt. 6:13), He hears us when we pray (1John 5: 14-15). As we do this consciously each day, we will be manifesting Godโ€™s glory in character.

Praying Point:

Letโ€™s ask God to help us, the entire body of Christ, to humble ourselves before Him and ask for His help in keeping His commandment. That He should reveal areas of our lives that is not consistent with His will. Again, He should help us to exercise our authority over the enemy.
