12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. Matthew 24:12-13

As told by Jesus in our opening verse, one of the characteristics of the end times is that there will be an increase of wickedness as a result of which the love of most will grow cold. And then Jesus said, “but the one who stands firm to the end will saved”.

From the context of the speech surely you will agree that “standing firm to the end” means continuing to walk in love to the end despite the wickedness in the world.

As we know Jesus’s command is:

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  John 13:34-35

So if this is Jesus’s command why then will the increase of wickedness cause the love of most to grow cold? One of the reasons I think is that people generally love those who love them and although we are believers in Christ Jesus we sometimes fall into the same pattern.

However, as believers, our source of love or inspiration for love must not come solely from others. Jesus says:

46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? Matthew 5:46

Rather our love for others must come primarily from God’s love for us.

Therefore to stand firm to the end we need absolutely to continue to believe in Jesus. Believing in His love for us. So that we are then empowered to love others regardless of whether they are wicked or good. You cannot give what you don’t have. Without Jesus, we cannot continue in love (John 15:5).

As we spend time with Jesus in our private prayers, worshiping Him in spirit and truth, He will renew our strength every time. When we receive God’s love by faith, believing that He died for our sins and all the promises of the scriptures, then we can give His selfless love to others from an abundance of that which we have received.

Prayer Points

Let’s thank God for the word today. Let’s pray that we spend time with Jesus to receive His love by faith from whence we can love others selflessly.
