No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it
(Hebrews 12:11, NIV)
At the point when Israel transitioned from the reign of judges to the reign of kings, God decided to communicate the importance of training for those He had chosen to rule. Though, based on the prophecy of Jacob, the kingship should be from Judah, as he said, “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet… ” (Genesis 49:10-12), God chose Saul, a Benjamite, to be king. He did this to communicate His mind.
Very shortly after Saul was anointed king, he started ruling by the power of God that came mightily upon him (1 Samuel 10:10; 11:6). However, King Saul rebelled against God by flaunting His instructions and was rejected as king over Israel (1 Samuel 15:10-11, 26-28). In the course of time, God found David, who was a Judean, and He anointed him as king over Israel (1 Samuel 16:1-13; 2 Samuel 5:1-5). Unlike Saul, David’s reign did not start immediately. He had an extended wilderness experience where God trained him and circumcised his heart to be loyal to Him (Psalm 51:10). David’s kingdom was established because of this.
Like David, God takes some of His children through an extended wilderness experience to prepare them for ruling. To rule like God, Christ needs to be formed in our hearts (Galatians 4:19). One of the ways He forms Christ in us is through the trials He allows (James 1:3-4). The kings of Israel were described as merciful (1 Kings 20:31). Even Ahab, one of the worst kings of Israel, had this attribute (1 Kings 20:31-34). You cannot be merciful if you do not share in the weaknesses of people (Hebrews 2:17). This is one of the things the wilderness experience affords.
In the wilderness, we learn about God, not just through reading His word, but through judgment. David said, “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees” (Psalm 119:71). And Isaiah said, “…for when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness” (Isaiah 26:9).
Prayer Point:
