“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
The Hebrew word for peace is ‘Shalom’, and it is often used in reference to an appearance of calm and tranquility of individuals, groups or nations. The deeper meaning of peace is the spiritual harmony brought about by an individual’s restoration to God. In our sinful state, we were enemies of God (Romans 5:10). But God demonstrated His love towards us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Before His sacrifice,ย His comingย was prophesied by many Prophets of old, one of them is prophet Isaiah. The prophecy revealed the Savior will champion peace to the world and establish the throne of God among men. Christ was referred to as “The Prince of Peace.”
No sinner can achieve peace with God in his own goodness. God’s standard of holiness demands death as payment for our sins. Through Jesus’ death on the cross, He became our peace offering and in Him we are reconciled to God.
Jesus does not only take our punishment; He takes away the guilt and shame that come along with the sin. Therefore, our account is settled, the balance is zero, we now have peace with God. If you have made peace with God through Jesus, you need to also go forth and make peace with others around you. Shalom!
Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask God to give us the peace which surpasses human understanding so we will show to the world that our God is indeed a God of peace.
