Title: Ready for Anything

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 โIf anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sistersโyes, even their own lifeโsuch a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 โSuppose one of you wants to build a tower. Wonโt you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, โThis person began to build and wasnโt able to finish.โ ย Luke 14:25-28
As Jesus narrated in the opening verse, before you start building a house, under normal circumstances, you would evaluate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it. So it is with the discipleship of Jesus, you have to be aware of the cost and make sure you’re ready for it.
With the call to follow Jesus, there are so many beautiful promises for a better now and tomorrow and even eternal life. We know in our times of need we can ask God anything in Jesusโs name and God will give it to us. John 16:23.ย We have a father that we can cast any cares upon Him. 1 Peter 5:7.ย Best of all you will never die. John 11:26. And so on and so forth.
However, It is improper and dangerous when you hear only the good side of the Christian life and you are not aware and prepared for the โnot so goodโ(in quotes because it is still good) side, the suffering side, like in this instance talking of persecution from within your household or denying your self. Jesus doesnโt mean in the opening verse that we should be actively hating our family or our lives, but that because you are putting God first it actually looks like you are hating them or yourself. If Jesus said we should love our enemies what more of our families? So you can see that the hate here is not about literally hatting(doing evil) but that you put God above them and yourself. It is like when Jesus told his mother โWho is my mother..โ(Mathew 12:48-50) or told Peter “get behind me Satan…โ(Mathew 16:23). Also similar to when Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other…”(Mathew 6:24).
What if your beloved spouse wants you to condescend or compromise with what God has instructed you?
What if your mother is not in support of your calling? Will you choose them over God.? What if your desire has been to travel to a country and God says I want you here or there. These are hard questions. But it helps when you really know God. Know He is my father and loves me more than my maternal mother. (Jeremiahs 29:11). God will take care of everything else. Just trust Him. By obeying God you will bless them.
Prayer Point:ย
Let’s thank God for the word today. Although hard and uncomfortable let’s pray for the grace to trust and obey our good and faithful God despite any internal resistance.
