“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!โ€ ย  ย  Lukeโ€ฌ โ€ญ11:13โ€ฌ โ€ญNIVโ€ฌโ€ฌ

Yesterday, I wrote about the gift of tongues and its importance in building ourselves up. Today, I am going to write about how you can receive this gift.
Of all the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit listed in 1 Corinthians 12, it’s only the gift of tongues that didn’t feature prominently in the Old Covenant. This speaks to how connected speaking in tongues is to the manifestation of the in-Christ realities we have in the New Covenant; the more we speak in tongues, the more we are enabled to manifest the character, power, and other attributes of God (His Glory). In fact, speaking in tongues helps you manifest the other gifts of the Spirit. This means the gift of tongues is a gift that should be desired.
In Acts Chapter two, when the Holy Spirit descended on the believers, one of the evidences of His coming was that the Apostles started speaking in other tongues (See Acts 2:2-3). So, once you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, you should be able to speak in tongues. We can be baptized by the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands (Acts 8:14-17, 19:6), listening to the word (Acts 10:44-48), or by simply asking Him to fill you with His Spirit (Luke 11:13).
The coming of the Holy Spirit does not mean you will automatically start speaking in tongues. Though He comes with the gift, we need to yield and utter the utterances He gives to us. The scriptures recorded that “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4). This means that though the Holy Spirit gave the utterance, the disciples were the ones who spoke.
Many people expect the Holy Spirit to automatically move their mouths before they believe they have received the gift of speaking in tongues, and for this reason, many don’t speak in tongues, for they think they are faking it. We speak in tongues by faith. So, once you are sure you are filled with the Holy Spirit, start speaking in tongues; it is the Holy Spirit giving you utterance.
