Title: Receiving the Reward
By: Daniel Peter
Date: July 15, 2024
But without faith, it is impossible to please Him: for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.ย Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
Our service to God and seeking Him comes with a reward. However, not everyone receives the reward. As Apostle Paul inferred, “And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules” (2 Timothy 2:5). Therefore, there are rules of engagement before we can receive the prize, that is, the reward.
The first rule of engagement in our service and seeking God is diligence. Scripture says, “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). The phrase “diligently seek” comes from the Greek word “ekzฤteล,” meaning to zealously seek something with all of one’s heart, strength and might. It conveys the idea of being hardworking, attentive, busy, constant, and persistent in one’s devotion. Only those who portray these qualities in their service and seeking God receive the reward.
Another rule of engagement to receive the reward is to love. Love makes our service profitable. As Apostle Paul said, “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor,ย and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing“ (1 Corinthians 13:1-3, NKJV). He further listed the qualities of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. To receive a reward from God, we must walk in love.
Another rule of engagement to receive a reward from God is to avoid seeking human recognition. When Jesus Christ taught on prayer, fasting, and giving (see Matthew 6:1-16), He emphasized the need for discretion. If we do things for human praise, we will lose our reward from God (see Matthew 6:2, 5, 16).
Finally, to receive our reward, we must be joyful in our service and seeking God. Being joyful in service is a sign of willingness, and scripture says, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land” (Isaiah 1:19, KJV).
