Title: Return to Your First Love

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. [5] Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (Revelation 2:4-5 )
The contentions that are associated with our standing in Christ are quite numerous, and they sometimes do not come with the ugly head of sin or open disobedience. They appear as little foxes that we may not pay attention to, but have the capacity to spoil the vine. They may come as complacency, familiarity with the things of God, thereby resulting in value reduction, procrastination in doing devotion, or delay in carrying out godly instructions. At other times, it may be taking offence at what someone we consider a brother or sister within the body of Christ might have done that hurts, and it becomes hard to let go.
In our opening text, we see Jesus writing a letter to the church at Ephesus. He commended their works, labor, and perseverance. Yet, in the midst of their religious activity, something very important was missing, which is their first love. This first love represents the pure affection, zeal, and devotion that once filled our relationship with Christ. It is the burning passion that makes prayer sweet, obedience joyful, and fellowship refreshing. When the fire of this love goes down, we may still be busy with ministry or church activities, but the heart behind it has grown cold.
We must, therefore, take note to remember, repent, and return. Remember the days when your heart longed for His presence, when Scripture felt alive, and obedience was not a burden. Repent not only of outward sins, but of the subtle drift that replaced love with duty. Then return to the first works, those simple heartfelt expressions of devotion: prayer from a place of intimacy, worship that overflows from gratitude, and service motivated by love, not obligation.
God is calling everyone who has strayed from the path of life back to Himself with His heart of mercy. Let us, with sincerity of heart, return to our first love.
Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let us ask grace to fully return to Him in love.
