Then they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.
Ruth 1:14 NKJV
Orpah kissed goodbye while Ruth clung. This was how the story of Naomi ended in Moab. God is a storyteller; this is why the Bible is replete with stories. Each story God tells reveals attributes of Himself and patterns for us to conform to. The book of Ruth is one of the most profound stories in the Bible, as it not only reveals God as the rewarder but also encourages readers to follow hard after Him.
Ruth was one of the two daughters-in-law of Naomi. At the death of her husband and two sons, Naomi decided to return to Israel. However, the daughters-in-law expressed a desire to follow her (see Ruth 1). Knowing she wouldn’t have any more children, and Orpah and Ruth had a very slim chance of being married again, she admonished them to return to their people (Ruth 1:11-13). Orpah returned, but Ruth clung.
Naomi was a Jew who worshipped the Lord. As Orpah and Ruth were married to her sons, they had been converted to the Jewish religion, though they had a pagan background. So the decision to either follow Naomi back to Israel or return to their people was less about finding a husband but more about the sincerity of their love for God, whom they had learned to worship during their time being married to Naomi’s sons.
This is why, after Orpah left, Naomi said to Ruth, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods…” (Ruth 1:15 NKJV), because by returning to her people, Orpah was returning to idol worship. The case was different for Ruth, who showed more love for God than the desire to be married, for she followed Naomi, saying, “…wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God (Ruth 1:16 NKJV).
There’s a cost to following Jesus. Are you ready to give up your desires for Him? Ruth showed more passion for God and love for her mother-in-law than her desire to be married. Can you do the same? Though following Jesus costs much, there is a great reward. Ruth became the wife of Boaz, one of the wealthiest men in Israel, and she became one of the grandparents of David and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
There’s a reward in following Jesus, but you must be willing to give up your all. Only those who truly love God follow Him.
