He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.(Psalms 91:1)

Our text today is a familiar chapter and verse in the head of many people today, it is like an anthem in the mouth of many Christians, we declare it but unfortunately many seldom translate it to reality. If one asks what actually is a secret place for a believer in Christ? I guess the common answer will be “a place of prayer”. Although it is true that the secret place of a consistent believer is a place of prayer, nonetheless, a secret place is more than that. For if we define and confine it only as place of prayer, then we limit or narrow its effects. A secret placeย  is a quiet personal environment where a believer allocates time (duration depends on the person’s willingness to stay) devoid of any external distraction such as noise, phones/electronic gadget but most importantly devoid of internal distractions such as worries, thoughts of the heart, parallel imagination, concerns of life etc that emanate from the mind.

It is a place of serious business where prayer is offered, thanksgiving, revelations are obtained, covenants are made, destinies are birthed, will of God is revealed. In addition, it is a place where God and man commune.ย  Scripturally, we see great men from Old Testament to the New did not joke with the secret place. Whenever they are wanted to seek the face of God, they go straight to the secret place. A clear example is Jacob, he wanted to seek God’s intervention concerning his brother Esau (Genesis 32:22-32), he sent away every form of distraction which was his family. Another example is Moses, he often went to a secret place to seek for God’s direction for the people.

More so, Daniel despite an obvious life threatening decree by the King, yet he did not compromise his secret place (Daniel 6:1-10). Jesus Christ who is our perfect model demonstrated life of true consecration by always finding time to commune with the Father in a secret place (Mark 1:35-39) Inspite of the multitudes demanding His attention, before He even named the apostles from the disciples, He spent all night in the secret place (Luke 6:12-16). The secret place is crucial to a serious believer because it is the place where divine instructions, strength (Isaiah 40:31), renewal, encounter, inspiration come. All that we manifest in public are the outcome of our secret place’s engagement.

Beloved, let us prioritize our secret place. God builds us up to that maturity in Christ by our commitment to spend quality quiet time in His presence; be it in prayer, worship, meditation or Scriptural study.

Prayer point

Let’s thank God for the word, and also ask Him for help to dedicate quality time for Him regardless of our life activities
