โI will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower and watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reprovedโ
(Habakuk 2:1 KJV)
The job of a watchman is not an easy one because it demands utmost diligence and sacrifice but with this comes great rewards, peace, joy and serenity. He has to be awake and alert at all times whether it is convenient or not. To be a watchman means taking responsibility for yourself and others in spite of prevailing circumstances. As Christians, we are spiritual watchmen, standing and staying awake in the Spirit to guard the lives that God has placed in our care and also listening to receive instructions from God when He speaks.
Firstly, it is a defensive post and therefore subject to attacks from the enemy as we can see in the life of Job who was a watchman over his children (Job 1:5). However, we are shown how to defeat the enemy in Ephesians 6:10-18 which starts by instructing us to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might and then taking on the whole armour of God and verse 18 says โ praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saintsโ. Watching and praying is very crucial to escaping the oppression in this world and our Lord Jesus knew this when he spoke to them a parable about the tribulations to come in Luke 21:36.
Secondly, we are positioned to receive instructions and guidance from the Lord both for ourselves and the lives connected to us. This is very important to remaining dominant and exercising our full authority in Christ over all of life’s circumstances. Prophet Habakuk from our scriptural reading today was eagerly watching to receive instructions from the Lordโ….and watch to see what he will say unto me...โ and God did speak in the second verse โAnd the Lord answered me and said, Write the vision…..”.
In conclusion, Christ has given us power to dominate and rule in the midst of our enemies and unpleasant life circumstances and to subdue them (Luke 10:19). It will therefore be an error to fall victim or lose anything and anyone to the enemy for lack of taking responsibility.
Prayer point:
Letโs thank God for the word today. Letโs ask God for spiritual empowerment to be diligent watchmen giving no ground to the enemy over the lives of those connected to us and also the grace to expressly receive clear instructions from Him.
God bless you all!
