37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’  Mathew 25:37-40

As we know already, Jesus’s command to us is to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34-35 NIV). The opening verse is yet another reminder of Jesus that we must love because that is who we are in Him; Righteous, Loving ! We are made righteous through our faith in Christ Jesus(2 Corinthians 5:21), so we have received the desire to love and the capacity to love which continues to grow through knowing Jesus more and more (through learning the word, prayer and practicing the word).

If you saw Jesus physically in need wouldn’t you help him out. If you saw Jesus hungry won’t you give Him food? However Jesus is in Heaven (although spiritually in us through the Holy Spirit) so we are left with no other choice but to love Jesus through those around us. Loving the ones He so loved that He died for them (which is us all).  The bible says in 1 John 4:19-20:  “We love because he first loved us.  Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.”

The opening verse ends with the phrase “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”. So in effect Jesus is saying that we should see him in every one. That we should love everyone in His name. Seeing Jesus is everyone will help us love them. It means seeing with the eyes of the Spirit. By the eyes of the Spirit I mean seeing as God sees. See the human dignity of each person which is the honour they deserve simply because they are made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27). See with God’s eyes of mercy; see evil men as those God longs for their repentance, the lost sheep, the one Jesus would leave the ninety nine to run after(Matthew 18:12). 

In conclusion in order for us see more clearly as God sees we need to grow in love, or grow in Spirit. Jesus said “ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8).  Seeing God also means seeing as God sees. Seeing God in places others may not see; that is the poor or evil and for this we need to purge our hearts.

Prayer Point:

Let’s pray for God to help us continue to purge our hearts through eating his word, praying in tongues and other faith growing exercises, so that we may see Him clearly in every one even the despised of society.
