Seek First the Kingdom of God
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
– Matthew 6:33 KJV
In this world, everyone is one way or another seeking something. Some people are seeking fame, money, food, clothe, relationship, peace, pleasure and many more. We were also taught in school to set goals and achieve them. However, as Christians, what should be our priority or our main goal in this life? What are we supposed to seek first? Our Lord Jesus, who is the way, the truth and the life, answered this question in the above verse. We are to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness above everything else. That is, we must put God first in our lives, fill our thoughts with His desires, take His character for our pattern, and to serve and obey Him in everything.
Brethren, there is more in Christ. There is more to know, more blessings and inheritance are in store for us, and there is a lot of work to be done. When we come to Christ, we are expected to grow spiritually, and there are also some good works or specific purposes we are supposed to fulfill on this earth. Therefore, our main desire as Christians must be to identify and fulfill Godโs purpose for us. Letโs be determined to promote the kingdom of God and bring others to the obedience of faith and of the will of God. Our daily desire must be to become more like Jesus!
The difference between Christians and unbelievers is based on what we seek (Matthew 6:32). However, what do we see nowadays? The minds of many Christians are filled with the desire for fame and riches. We want to be rich at all cost. Please donโt misunderstand me here; I am not saying money is bad. Money is good and the Bible even encourages us to work hard (2 Thessalonians 3:10). It is also written that Money answers everything (Ecclesiastes 10:19). At the end of the month, we have to pay rent, house bills, support our families, give to the poor and needy, and support the Church financially. However, money can also be deceptive and the love of it has taken many people away from the Faith. If you get 10 today, you will want to get 100 tomorrow and 1000 the next day. You always want to get more money and therefore spend all your time on earth searching and by the time you realize, you are in your grave and didnโt do anything for God. The deceitfulness of riches is one of the weapons of the enemy, so letโs be vigilant and careful about it.
Beloved in the Lord, God really loves and cares for us. He is our โGood Good Fatherโ who already knows everything we need in this life even before we ask Him. One lovely thing about God is that, as we seek first His Kingdom and Righteousness, He provides us with all our earthly needs as well. When Solomon was made King of Israel, the Lord appeared to him and asked him what he wants. Solomon then asked for wisdom above everything else. The Lord was really impressed by what Solomon did and as a result, added Riches and Fame to his request (1 Kings 3:1-15).
What is really important to you? People, objects, goals, and other desires all compete for priority. Any of these can quickly become most important to you if you donโt actively choose to give God first place in every area of your life.
Prayer Point:
Letโs thank God for His word today. Letโs ask God to give all believers the desire to seek first His Kingdom and Righteousness above everything else. Letโs ask God to also help us overcome the deceitfulness of Riches.
