And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
Exodus 17:11 ASV
Many times, God’s best for us is not revealed by an audible voice or a vivid vision but is discerned through observation, and it takes the spiritually sensitive to receive them. For this reason, our concept of the voice of God must be expanded to include those things He chooses not to say literally.
Our opening verse of scripture speaks of an event that happened when Joshua led the Israelites against an enemy (Amalek) when Moses was still alive. It happened that when Moses’ hand was lifted up, Joshua and Israel prevailed against the enemy, but when it was down, they were defeated. Before this time, God did not tell Moses that the key to victory was for his hand to be raised, but he and the people observed this, and they devised a means for Moses’ hand to always be up (see Exodus 17:8-12).
In like manner, there are certain things God would not literally tell us, but by observation, we will be able to discern them, and this happens when we are spiritually sensitive. The Jews in the time of Jesus were unable to receive Jesus Christ because they were unable to discern the signs of the times (Matthew 16:1-4, Mark 8:11-13). Jesus rebuked them, saying, “O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (Matthew 16:3). In this end time, those who will be spared from the permitted evil of the season are those who are discerning (Matthew 24:15-20).
To increase our spiritual sensitivity, we have to always be conscious of God. Discerning His presence with us and in the events of our day will help us stay spiritually aware. Also, listening to messages and prophetic utterances helps in this regard, as we will gain understanding of His mind. Again, observing natural events will help us discern the spiritual and increase our sensitivity.
A spiritually sensitive person is a person of great faith, and sensitivity is humility. Those who are spiritually sensitive receive God’s best for them and are protected from the vicissitudes of life.
