For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? ย Mark 8:36 KJV
When mentioning the trade Babylon was involved in, among what was listed in Revelation 18:11โ13 were the souls of men. Babylon symbolically represents the kingdom of darkness. This means the devil is a trader, and he is actively initiating transactions with men to get something more valuable from them than what he gives to them.
The issue is, the devil is not a fair trader, for he will only tell you what you stand to gain, but not what you stand to lose. The first transaction we saw in the Bible was when he lured Adam and Eve to partake of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3:1โ7). He promised them wisdom, but he didn’t tell them they would lose the Kingdom, which was delivered to him at their fall (Luke 4:6).
At the coming of Jesus Christ, the devil approached Him to trade with Him. He demanded worship from Jesus and promised Him the kingdoms he received from Adam (Matthew 4:8โ9). This looked like a good dealโmere worship for all the kingdoms on earth. If Jesus had traded with the devil, He would have become a servant of the devil. And the “all authority in heaven and on earth” that Jesus received when His obedience was complete would have been given to the devil (Matthew 28:18).
As we have seen, you are always at a loss when you accept the devil’s offer. His offer may come in different ways and through different means. Like Esau, who traded his birthright for a plate of food (Genesis 25:29โ34). However, the devil is not the only trader; God also initiates trade. When Jesus told the rich man to sell all he had and give to the poor (Mark 10:21), it was an opportunity for him to make much gain, which he missed. We gain a hundredfold more of whatever we sacrifice to follow Jesus (Mark 10:30).
When we sin, we are trading with the devil, but when we obey God, we are making a trade with Him, and the reward is the profit. Being conscious of this reality will help us avoid the devil’s bait and utilize the opportunities for gain that God brings to us.
