submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:21 KJV

The word submission means the action of accepting or yielding to a superior force or to the will or authority of another person. Though when Apostle Paul was giving instructions about marriage, he specifically mentioned that wives should be subject to their husbands, but the instruction to submit is not one that is limited to married women, but every member of the body of Christ.

Marriage between a man and a woman is symbolic of our relationship with God, for just as wives are subject to their husbands, we are to be subject to Christ as our head (Eph. 5:23). However, God is resident in each one of us, as our body is the temple of God (1 Cor. 3:16โ€“17). This means, to express our submission to God, we are to submit to one another, recognising that God is residing in the other. For example, when Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar and her child away ( Gen. 21: 8-21), Abraham was not pleased with Sarah’s request (verse 11), But God instructed Abraham to listen to whatever Sarah says to him, requesting Abraham to submit to Sarah’s demand (verse 12). This was because what Sarah said was in line with the will of God.

Submitting to each others authority is one of the ways in which unity is obtained. As faces are different, so are the opinions of people. But we can choose to submit to the opinion of others despite our perception of what we think is right, giving way for peace and unity. This can only be achieved when we see God in the other person.

Prayer Point

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask God to help us to submit to one another.
