It has always been God’s will for man to know His mind. For when we do, we attain to the extent of His likeness that we can see (2Cor. 3:18). As a means to achieve this, He communicates His thoughts to us through different means, which includes allegories. 

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, an allegory is defined as “the expression by means of symbolic fictional figures and actions of truths or generalizations about human existence”. That is, an allegory is simply a symbolic representation. The physical world (the natural) and the non physical world (the spiritual) were designed by God to be allegories of each other. Which means, with what we observe in the natural, we can know what is in the spirit realm and discern the mind of God. One of such allegories in the natural is marriage between a man and a woman. 

Marriage between a man and a woman is symbolic of the relationship between Christ and His Church (Eph. 5:31-32). To understand the way Christ relates with His Church, we need to see how marriage works in the natural. And to know what God expects from two people in a marriage, we need to look at Christ and His Church. For example, for the man to know how to love his wife as God requires, he has to see the sacrifice of Jesus Christ at the cross for the Church who was unworthy (Rom. 5:8). In emulating this, he (the man) will reflect Him (Jesus Christ) in his marriage. Again, for the woman to learn how to submit to the man, she needs to look at how the Church submits to and reverences the Lord. 

Therefore, the key to a successful marriage is understanding the mystery of Christ and His Church. This knowledge is what all intending marriage partners should seek and ask God for the grace to emulate.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s also ask Him to let the light of the knowledge of His union with man spread to all nations.
