In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Scripture implores us to thank God at all times. No matter what we are going through there are still so many reasons to thank God. We thank Him for salvation, for health, for providence e.t.c. Like all of God’s instructions, thanking Him yields so many benefits which I would like to remind us of a few.

Thanking God brings us peace. When we are faced with troubles of different kinds, and we channel it to God through prayers and thanksgiving, His immediate response is to fill our hearts with peace; a peace that contradicts the situation we are facing (Philippians 4:6-7).

If you want to shame the devil and please God, one thing to do is to thank God when you hear or experience a so-called bad thing. It shows that you have put your trust in Him and believe that He is working things out for your good because you have set your heart towards Him (Romans 8:28). Remember how God boasted about Job to the devil when Job served him in good times. Now imagine how all the more pleased God was when Job heard the bad news but declared “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.(Job 1:21)

Whenever Jesus shared food with His disciples, He gave thanks. When Jesus wanted to multiply the bread and fish to feed thousands of people, He didn’t pray “father multiply this bread” and then afterwards thank God saying “father I have seen the bread you multiplied, thank you”. He gave thanks for what was available and simply shared the bread. His thanksgiving was not postponed until when multiplication is seen but started before. It shows that thanking God in what appears little triggers increase or multiplication.

Thanking God in desperate situations moves God for the miraculous. After been beaten and thrown into prison, Paul and Silas were praising God at midnight when suddenly the power of God manifested by among other things the chains of all prisoners breaking loose. (Acts 16:25-28)

Thanksgiving encourages God to prepare the best for us and not deliver incomplete blessings to us.  The list of benefits likely goes on and on. So let’s cry out like the Psalmist “Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” (Psalm 103:1).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for this Word. Let’s pray for the grace to trust in God and thank Him always.
