The Cross of a Sent One
CALL TO PRAYER

โIt is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!โ
Matthew 10:25 (NIV)
When God raises a minister, He entrusts that person with a message for their generation. Though this calling is honourable, it comes with a cross that must be borne. Understanding this from the beginning strengthens the sent one to endure faithfully throughout the mission.
When Jesus Christ sent out His disciples during His earthly ministry, He instructed them:
โProvide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.โ
Matthew 10:9โ10 (NKJV)
This was a call to absolute dependence on God. Those whom He sends must learn to trust Him for provision. Many times, when God sends someone on an assignment, He may require them to leave their means of livelihood and give full attention to the mission. Peter, James, and John were fishermen, yet they left their profession to follow Jesus. Following Him demands trusting Him as our Provider. Though God may not always require you to leave your job, you must be willing and prepared to do so if the call demands it.
Another cross a sent one must bear is rejection and persecution. In the same chapter where Jesus sent out His disciples, He warned them:
โIt is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!โ
Matthew 10:25 (NKJV)
Jesus was called demon-possessed; therefore, a sent one may be called worse. Misunderstanding often accompanies divine assignment. Many prophets and disciples of Christ laid down their lives while delivering Godโs message to their generation. As sent ones, we must be willingโif the assignment requires itโto lay down our lives literally for Him.
Another cross of the sent one is a stricter judgment before God. James writes:
โNot many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.โ
James 3:1 (NIV)
To whom much is given, much is required. Therefore, we must seek grace not only to preach truth but to live it. Our actions often speak louder and bear greater witness than our words.
This message is not meant to discourage us from yielding to God, but to prepare our minds and hearts to bear our cross faithfully as we fulfil our divine calling.
Prayer Points
- Thank God for His Word today.
