The Enemy of the Cross: Convenience
Call to Prayer

Then Jesus said to His disciples, โWhoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.โ
Matthew 16:24 (NIV)
Being a disciple of Jesus Christ comes with a cost, and that cost is the cross. The cross represents the suffering associated with obeying Himโeverything we endure as a result of being identified with Him.
Though obedience leads to glory, before the manifestation of that glory, God will usually allow us to endure a season of suffering. He allows this suffering to mature us and perfect our character (James 1:2โ3). For example, before Joseph was exalted in Egypt, he endured about 13 years of suffering. That season was the cross he carried on his way to glory.
So, the cross is the gateway to glory. However, there is an enemy of the crossโand that enemy is convenience. Because the cross is uncomfortable and requires self-denial, many reject its suffering simply because it is not convenient. Though it may seem normal for our flesh to resist discomfort, this resistance is often the enemyโs strategy to keep us at a particular level in our relationship with God.
It is inconvenient to fast and pray, yet there are oppositions you cannot overcome unless you do (Matthew 17:21). It is inconvenient to study the Word, especially early in the morning, yet there are depths in God you will never reach without diligent study.
Giving the little we have is not convenient, yet there are levels of financial prosperity we will never experience without sacrificial giving. Being persecuted and rejected is not something the flesh desires, yet we cannot experience the fullness of Godโs blessing without enduring such trials (Mark 10:29โ30).
God has not called us to convenience but to fellowship (1 Corinthians 1:9)โincluding fellowship with His sufferings (Philippians 3:10). We must be willing to embrace our cross if we are to make progress in the faith.
We receive the grace to endure by fixing our eyes on Jesus, who, โfor the joy set before Him, endured the crossโ (Hebrews 12:2). And when we ask for His help, He enables us to walk through seasons of suffering and testing.
