For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield. (Psalm 5:12 KJV)
Recently, I began to ponder on the journey of David when he ran from King Saul to cave Adullam and the strange favour that followed him. 1Chr 12:22 records it that “For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God”. I would have struggled to understand it if I was only looking at it naturally because nobody likes to be associated with a fugitive, knowing they could also lose their own lives if caught together. However, David carried favour as a shield, and that was the attractive force that pulled helpers towards him.
Contrast that with the man at the pool of Bethesda who had no helper for thirty-eight years. His cry was, “I have no man.” That is the language of someone outside the circle of favour. Yet, when Jesus stepped into his story, divine favour intervened, and he received in one moment what he had waited decades for. Favour ends delay.
Favour is God’s divine influence upon a person that makes others willing and even eager to help them, sometimes without understanding why. It bridges the gap between who we are and where God is taking us. Take Esther, for example, an orphaned Jewish girl who became queen in a foreign land. There were likely others more refined, more connected, or better groomed for royalty. But favour made the difference. “And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her” (Esther 2:15). The favour of God made her stand out.
Moreover, favour is not only about being lifted; it is also about being shielded. Psalm 5:12 says it surrounds the righteous like a shield. That means in times of danger, calamity, or judgment, favour can be a covering. Noah found favour in God’s eyes and was spared from destruction. Lot was pulled out of Sodom because of Abraham’s favour with God. In turbulent times, favour brings divine exemption.
In conclusion, the favour factor is not earned by merit but granted by God’s mercy. It is available to the righteous. As you seek God daily, ask Him for His favour. It is a powerful force that turns the ordinary into extraordinary.
Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to surround us with His favour as a shield. Let it attract divine help and shield us from every form of harm In Jesus name.
