Whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed.
Romans 3:25 (NKJV)
Forbearance describes Godโs patience with sinโHis restraint in executing judgment while giving humanity time to repent. It reveals His graciousness and love. Since God is the standard of love and we are called to love as He has loved us, understanding His forbearance helps us love rightly and also discern the limits of what we should expect from others.
God has hope in humanityโthat we will return to Him after departing through sin. For this reason, He often restrains judgment, waiting for repentance. Because of the severity of His judgment, this season of waitingโthe period of forbearanceโis necessary. However, Godโs forbearance is not without limits.
This limit is seen in Godโs word to Abraham concerning the land of Canaan. Speaking of the Amorites, God said, โBut in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet fullโ (Genesis 15:16, KJV). This reveals that Godโs forbearance operates within a measurable boundaryโtheir sin had not yet reached its full measure.
Godโs forbearance can be likened to a cup of fixed size with water dripping into it. No matter how slow the drops fall, the cup will eventually be full. Persistent sin can therefore bring a person to the point where the limit of Godโs forbearance is exceeded.
This truth applies not only to the Old Testament but also under the New Covenant. Scripture warns, โIf we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgmentโ (Hebrews 10:26โ27). When Paul warned, โSo do not become proud, but fearโ (Romans 11:20, ESV), he cautioned believers against persisting in sin, which is unbelief, lest they too be broken off from Christ.
We serve a gracious and patient God who forbears with us, hoping for repentance and transformation. Persisting in sin despite His love is taking His love for granted. Godโs forbearance has a limit, and judgment awaits those who continually despise it. Therefore, fear God.
