And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. (Matthew 6:12 KJV)
For 27 years, Nelson Mandela, a freedom fighter, was incarcerated, labelled a terrorist, denied his freedom, lost the opportunity to be there as a father for his children, and did not enjoy coming home to the warm embrace of his wife.
However, when he was finally released, he chose to forgive after all the suffering he went through. He began rebuilding his country instead of taking revenge on his enemies. That action brought his country together, cemented his legacy, and made him a global icon that is still being revered till today.
Similarly, we see Joseph, who, in his youthful innocence, had made himself an enemy to his brothers by showing off before them the dream that God had shown him and how they will bow down to him( Gen. 37:5). His journey to slavery, eventhough was unpleasant was still better than their initial plan to kill him. After becoming prime minister in Egypt, his dream came to pass because they all bowed down to him. With all that he went through, he was still able to forgive them because of the fear of God in him. He saw their actions as God ordained (Gen. 45:5).
Have you been cheated, treated unfairly by people you love, or betrayed by someone you deeply trust, and have you sacrificed everything for people who seem to take advantage of your benevolence without any consideration towards you?
The most profitable way is to forgive them like Joseph did. When our Lord Jesus was on the cross, he was still pleading for forgiveness on behalf of people who were killing him (Luke 23:34).
Unforgiveness puts people in mental prison and ties them to a spot. It was this same prison that Absalom found himself and it eventually led to his destruction. Joseph could have killed all his brothers and destroyed their lineage when they came to him in Egypt, but he chose to forgive, and today, a country called Israel is still standing because a man forgave.
Prayer point:
Let us thank God for His word today. Let’s ask for the grace to forgive everyone who has hurt us, whom we find hard to let go of in our hearts.
