I have refined you, but not as silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.ย
Isaiah 48:10 (NLT
When Jesus manifested as a man, He made statements that reveal the nature of the human vessel. When He said, “He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38 KJV), it suggests our vessels are channels through which rivers flow.
The purity of our vessels determines the purity of the water of the rivers that flow from within us, just like when you put clean water in a dirty container, the water becomes dirty because of the container. The rivers that flow from within us are for the healing of the nations (Revelation 22:1-2, Ezekiel 47:1-12). To ensure it is pure, God would need to purify our vessels.
Hidden faults like pride, bitterness, and unbelief, and other obvious sins like lying and stealing, are some of the impurities that can defile our vessels. However, when we go through His process of purification, these are removed from us. From the scriptures, there are several ways in which God purifies us: by the word (Ephesians 5:25-27, John 15:3) and by His blood (1 John 1:7, Revelation 7:14). When speaking to the children of Israel, He mentioned suffering as another means of purification, comparing it with the purifying of silver in fire (Isaiah 48:10).
When silver is placed in a fire, the dirt within the silver comes to the surface, and from there, it is cleaned off. In the same manner, when God allows His children to suffer, the hidden sins in our lives become obvious, and then they can be cleaned off by His blood when we acknowledge our faults (1 John 1:9, Proverbs 28:13).
Though Apostle Paul had not fallen into the sin of pride, he had the potential to be proud, so God caused him to suffer by allowing a messenger of Satan to buffet him (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). The self-righteousness of Job was revealed in the time of his suffering, and it was rid of him at the end of the trials when he repented (Job 42:1-6).
Suffering doesn’t only purify us; it also reveals us. When an imitation of silver is placed in fire, it is consumed, revealing that it was an imitation. But genuine silver isn’t consumed; it’s refined. In like manner, when God takes us through the furnace of suffering, the genuine nature of our faith is revealed, for we are not consumed (Isaiah 43:2).
So persevere, that trial is for a good purpose. At the end of it, you will come out as pure gold.
