You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great.
— Psalm 18:35 NKJV
— Psalm 18:35 NKJV
Though Solomon surpassed David in wealth and wisdom, David is often regarded as the greatest king in Israel’s history before the coming of Jesus Christ. David excelled in his position as King of Israel, becoming the standard by which God measured other kings who ruled after him (1 Kings 15:3, 2 Kings 18:3, 2 Kings 22:2).
David was well aware of his greatness and recognized its source. In one of his Psalms, he said to God, “Your gentleness has made me great” (Psalm 18:35 NKJV). The word “gentleness” is translated from the Hebrew word “‛anvâh,” which is often rendered as “humility” or “meekness.” However, its deeper meaning encompasses occupying one’s God-given space in the world, neither overestimating nor underestimating oneself or one’s abilities.
This attribute of God enables right assessment of one’s worth and abilities. It was evident when David rose up against Goliath, as he was fully assured of his abilities and confident that God was with him (1 Samuel 17:45-47). This confidence was mistaken for pride by David’s brother Eliab (1 Samuel 17:28). Similarly, Jesus Christ demonstrated this attribute when He spoke against the religious leaders of His time, overturned the tables of those selling at the temple, and affirmed His identity in the face of opposition (Matthew 21:12-13, Mark 11:15-17, Luke 19:45-46).
Though God’s gentleness relates to humility and meekness, it doesn’t necessarily mean taking a lower position. Rather, it involves operating fully from one’s God-given position. This may be mistaken for pride and arrogance by some, but without it, greatness cannot be manifested.
Just as we have received God’s righteousness as a gift (Romans 5:17, 1 Corinthians 1:30), we have also received His gentleness as a gift. Like David, we too can say that His gentleness has made us great. With time, we will see this manifest in our lives.

Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let’s express gratitude for His gentleness that has made us great.
