Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4 NIV
After the creation of mankind, humans had one language. Because of this, unity was easy to achieve. However, after the fall of man, the devil took advantage of united mankind and moved them through Nimrod to build a tower reaching to the heavens.
God considered this move evil because their intention was to make a name for themselves, and they wanted to remain in one location instead of being scattered around the earth as God intended when He told Adam “… fill the earth and subdue it (See Genesis 1:28, 11:4)”. For this reason, they were resisted, and God confused their language so that they could no longer understand each other (Genesis 11:7).
Though the old world found themselves in opposition to God, unity is God’s will for humanity. When God said, “… If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them (Genesis 11:6 NIV)”, He was revealing the power of unity.
After the work Jesus did at the cross of Calvary, the sin nature of mankind was dealt with. And by the coming of the Holy Spirit, humans were given a language, called the gift of tongues. The unity that was lost when God confused the languages of the old world has been restored by the coming of this gift. Unlike the building of a tower reaching the heavens that Nimrod tried building, we are building ourselves up in the spirit when we speak in tongues (Jude 1:20). This is how we ascend in the spirit.
As we engage the gift of tongues, God’s thoughts fill our heart, making us one in heart.
Like God said of the old world, nothing shall be impossible for us. However, we will not be resisted by Him, for what we will build will be for His glory and not ours.
Prayer Point
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help each of us spend more time speaking in tongues.
