โ€œIt is God who judges…โ€ โ€” Psalm 75:7

When we read the story of David, we find a man the Scriptures described as a man after God’s own heart, who fell into sin. In his story, we see that though God forgives and is merciful, it doesn’t stop Him from being a God that judges.

After David slept with Uriah’s wife and caused him to be killed because he wanted to hide his sin, God sent Nathan to reveal his actions to him (2 Samuel 12:1โ€“14). After Nathan made his sin known, David acknowledged his fault by saying, โ€œI have sinned against the Lordโ€ (2 Samuel 12:13). And Nathan immediately responded by saying, โ€œThe Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to dieโ€ (2 Samuel 12:13), indicating that God had mercy on him because he acknowledged his fault.

However, as a consequence of his actions, David went on to lose four sons and suffered the reproach of having one of his sons, Absalom, as his adversary, who slept with his concubines in the open (2 Samuel 16:21โ€“22). Though his life was spared, his actions weren’t left without consequences. In like manner, though we can simply acknowledge our faults before God, and He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all forms of unrighteousness (1 John 1:9), we may still be chastised by God, as we saw in the life of David.

Jacob was one who received the blessing meant for his brother through deceptive means. Though God affirmed the blessing he received when he encountered Him as he slept at Bethel on his way to Labanโ€™s house (Genesis 28:10โ€“22; 31:3โ€“13), God did not leave his actions without consequences. For he too was deceived by Laban, who changed his wages ten times while he served him and deceptively allowed him to marry Leah (Genesis 29:15โ€“30).

Though God loves us despite our shortcomings, it doesn’t stop Him from judging us for our wrongdoing when necessary. This judgment becomes an act of love because, by it, we are trained and preserved from being destroyed with the world.

Prayer Point

Letโ€™s thank God for His Word today. Letโ€™s ask Him to help us know that there are consequences for our actions.
