fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrew 12:2 NIV

The pathway to glory isn’t a smooth one, for it leads first to the cross before the throne. Shortly after Jesus prayed that the Father should glorify Him with the glory He had with Him before the world began (John 17:5), the Father led Him to the cross, where he experienced a very shameful and painful death.

However, that death was the springboard He needed to ascend to the glory He had requested from the Father. For after His obedience, scriptures recorded that “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name (Phil. 2:6)“. Like Jesus, we have to go through the cross before we experience the exaltation (glorification).

The cross represents the sufferings we may endure when we choose to obey God. Scriptures say “If indeed we share in his sufferings so that we may also share in his glory (Rom. 8:17)“. So, sharing in His suffering (the cross), is the criteria to share in His glory. Usually, the Lord would reveal the glory ahead through His promises to you.

The grace to endure the cross is to set your eyes (focus) on the glory ahead revealed by His promises, despite the shame and pain of the cross. Scriptures said of Jesus: “For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God“. Only those who do this will receive the exaltation at the end of the trials associated with the cross.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us focus on the glory ahead, and not on the pain and shame associated with the cross.
