โ€œBut He gives more grace. Therefore He says: โ€˜God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.โ€™โ€

(James 4:6 NKJV)

While studying the Scriptures recently, I noticed the word โ€œbutโ€ at the beginning of James 4:6. This indicates that what is written in this verse is directly connected to the premise established in the preceding verses.

In verse 4, James addresses adulterers and adulteresses, warning that friendship with the world is enmity with God. In verse 5, he speaks about the Spirit who dwells in us yearning jealously. Therefore, the โ€œbutโ€ in verse 6 introduces a contrast to what has just been described. When Scripture says, โ€œBut He gives more grace,โ€ it immediately reveals that this grace is given to the humble. This means that the proud, whom God resists, are those described earlierโ€”those who are friends with the world.

A Christian who lives a worldly lifestyle is proud, because such a person is not submitted to the Word of God. Scripture makes it clear that God resists the proud. To be resisted by God is to have God as an adversary. And when God resists someone, who can help them?

A biblical example of someone resisted by God is Reuben. When he came among his brothers to receive a blessing from his father, he received a curse instead because he defiled his fatherโ€™s bed. As a result, he was prevented from excelling (Genesis 49:4).

The person God considers humble is one who is obedient to both the written and spoken instructions of God. By giving the humble more grace, God enables them to manifest the blessings that are in Christ more fully. While humility proceeds from wisdom (Proverbs 11:2; James 3:13), pride has its roots in foolishness.

The humble person finds rest (Matthew 11:29), but the proud personโ€™s life is filled with conflict as a result of being resisted. For example, when Solomon walked in humility, he had rest from his enemies. However, when he became proud and departed from the ways of God by following his wives, God raised adversaries against him (1 Kings 11:14-40)

The way of humility is the way of peace, and it leads to riches and honour (Proverbs 22:4). A humble person is sustained by God, but a proud person is cut down (Isaiah 14:15). The humble are exalted, while the proud are brought low (Philippians 2:8โ€“9).
