Title: The Key to Perfection of Character
By: Daniel Peter
Date 06:06:2023
And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, Iย amย the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
Genesis 17:1 KJV
When Apostle Paul was highlighting the reasons Christ gave gifts unto the church, among the things he mentioned was “for the perfection of the saints (Eph. 4:12)”. Therefore, God expects the Church to attain perfection of character, and one of the provisions of grace to attain this was the giving of the ministry gifts by Jesus Christ.
Though we have been commanded to be perfect in our character, lots of Christians see this as an unattainable goal; we tend to be very comfortable with our level and assume God is pleased in our lack of interest to be more aligned to His will. When Jesus Christ was speaking about the end time, He mentioned that “… as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be (Matt. 24:37)“. If Noah was revealed to be perfect in His generation (Gen. 6:9), for us to be used as him to be a cover to God’s people this time, it is necessary that we find grace in God as he did to attain perfection in our character.
To buttress this point, Ephesians 5:17 suggests that Jesus Christ is coming for a Church that is without spot or wrinkle (which is another way of saying a Church that is perfect). In truth, every sincere look at the scripture reveals that God expects this from us, for His instruction is that we should be perfect as God the Father is perfect (Matt. 5:48). The way to perfection is love, and the grace to attain it comes by living in the consciousness of God. When God was set to fulfill His promises to Abraham, there was a need for Abraham’s character to be more in line with God’s will. God told him “walk before me and be thou perfect (Gen. 17:1)”, giving him the key to perfection.
We walk before God by being constantly aware that He is with us, and speaking and acting in line with this awareness. This was the secret of Job, Noah, Enoch, Joseph and all who lived a blameless/perfect life in scriptures, it is the same key He has given to the Church today.
Prayer Point
Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s also ask Him to help us to be conscious of His presence at all times.
