Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? Let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
James 3:13 (KJV)
Meekness is an attribute of humility. It is the ability not to easily offend or be offended. From the statement of James in James 3:13, works done in meekness are the evidence that one is wise and endued with wisdom.
When Wisdom, who is Jesus, manifested as a man, His meekness and lowliness of heart were the only things that He specifically asked us to learn from Him (Matthew 11:29). His teachings were centered around this, such as turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39) and giving your coat to someone who takes your shirt (Matthew 5:40). These actions can only be fulfilled by one who is meek. One cannot love as He has loved us if we are not meek.
So, meekness, which is an attribute of humility, is not weakness as some perceive, but evidence of one who is in total surrender to God. On the other hand, pride proceeds from foolishness, as it takes disregarding God to act proudly. When meekness produces the righteousness of God, pride is a sign of one who is in the flesh (carnal).
When Apostle Paul was addressing the Corinthian Church about their attitude towards one who was caught in the act of fornication (1 Corinthians 5:1-13), he was appalled that instead of the Church feeling bad or mourning because of the situation, they were rather puffed up, that is, proud about it (1 Corinthians 5:2). This is the same for many Christians who engage in sinful acts, as many express pride about what they should weep for. This is because they are in the flesh.
One who is proud cannot submit to God’s Word. Humility or meekness leads to grace, but a proud person is resisted by God (James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5). Meekness reveals one who has found wisdom, and it makes that person’s works or ways align with God.
