For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Hebrews 12:6 KJV

Some years ago, I was watching an American singer who had made a habit of mocking Jesus and the things of the faith. Though a man, he inflated his stomach to appear like a pregnant woman, promoting ideas tied to the LGBTQ+ movement. As I watched, I thought within my heart, โ€œWhat if God allows his stomach to burst open so that he will know what he is promoting is wrong?โ€ But then I discerned the Lordโ€™s voice whispering to my heart: โ€œThat would be mercy.โ€

This response from God made me realise something profound: there are expressions of His love that do not look pleasant to the flesh, yet they are truly His mercy. When we can recognise chastening as an expression of His love, it becomes easier to thank Him even in hard times.

The Bible teaches us that chastening is one of the ways God affirms us as His children. โ€œFor whom the Lord loves, He chastensโ€ (Hebrews 12:6). It is not something enjoyable in the moment, but it is a divine training process that produces holiness in us (Hebrews 12:10). To be chastened by God is proof that you belong to Him. Those who live as they please without correction are described as illegitimate, not true sons.

Chastening is also Godโ€™s way of preserving His children for eternity. When Paul addressed the church in Corinth about the man caught in fornication, he said, โ€œHand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lordโ€ (1 Corinthians 5:5 NIV). What looked like judgment was, in reality, mercy. Without such discipline, the man could have remained in sin and risked eternal rejection.

Every child of God who endures chastening is being prepared and approved by the Father. The correction may sting, but its outcome is life, holiness, and salvation. To reject Godโ€™s discipline is to reject His love; but to embrace it is to walk in the path of true sonship.
