Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

Philippians 3:15 KJV
Yesterday, we learned that perfection is possible in the kingdom. In the early Church, this knowledge was common, and Apostle Paul, as seen in the opening texts, addressed certain individuals in the Church who have attained perfection about the mindset they should have. In today’s Call to Prayer, we will discuss some of them.
Long before the creation of man, the devil was described as perfect before his fall. Scripture says of him: “Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created… (Ezekiel 28:15 KJV). However, the devil fell from perfection when his heart became proud because of his beauty (see Ezekiel 28:17). The beauty referred to in this verse is not physical beauty but spiritual beauty, which is holiness, as Scripture says “O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness… (Psalm 96:9 KJV)”. This means the devil became proud because he became very conscious of his own righteousness and holiness before God.
To help believers who have attained perfection and become aware of it (the Holy Spirit will inform you when you attain it), so they shouldn’t fall into the sin of pride, God used Apostle Paul to teach them the kind of mindset they should have that would keep them from falling, using himself as an example. One of the things he said was “… be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith (Phil. 3:9 KJV)”. The righteousness in the law is the righteousness by works, and to be perfect means your works are like God’s. Apostle Paul was telling them that though they do righteous works, they shouldn’t hold on to it as the basis of what they receive from God, rather, they should hold on to the righteousness that is by faith.
Job, who was described as “perfect” (Job 1:1), was one who failed in the above-stated area until God helped him through the trials he experienced. From his speeches in the book of Job, we see that Job’s assurance of a good ending was his own righteousness (read Job 29). At a point, Job said “My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go… (Job 27:6 NKJV), revealing that Job was more conscious of his own righteousness than the righteousness of God. After Elihu and God addressed this error of Job, he repented of this attitude at the end of his trial, affirming that he uttered what he did not understand (Job 42:3), and he said “I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes.โ (Job 42:6 NKJV). What Job did not understand was that righteousness is a gift. We can avoid his trials if we have the right mindset towards righteousness.
Another thing Apostle Paul told those who were perfect was that he doesn’t count himself to have attained perfection (Phil. 3:12), despite having attained perfection. This means, though the Holy Spirit will reveal to you that you have attained perfection, you should live as though you have not attained it, desiring to be more aligned with Him. This will help you to remain humble.
